Info about layout of the Dam pages on this site

The dams along the rivers are split into various sections for ease of handling,
most rivers are split into two pages, Upper and Lower .
There is an overall 'All Dams' map only page with All Dams on it
(as well as a single 'All Map' with everything (bridges & dams) on it).

LHS menu: lower-case items are for potential future expansion, see future construction notes.
as are the river section descriptions without hyperlinks on relevant pages .

Each page has a map with coloured, numbered markers and labels
which link to the relevant content (where and if it exists!) on the page.

The dams are numbered consecutively from the first dam upstream, down to the highest number furthest downstream.

Each Dam has upto 5 sites, being

a)  weir, &/or start of top goit or race where it leaves the river,
d)  Dam itself,
w)  Wheel
x)   Tail goit, or lower race to where it rejoins the river
e)  Overflow channel, to where it rejoins the river.

The markers on the map are:-

White   start of top goit (i.e. "a1),
Yellow   Dam location ( i.e. "d1"), often not used as usually just above wheel
Grey   Wheel location ( i.e. "w1"),
Black   end of lower or tail goit (i.e. "x4").

At each site the photos are organized consistently, being:

dam schematic

a)  Top Goit
1 - Start, looking downstream to weir & dam (mainly east),
2 - Start, looking upstream to weir (mainly west).
3 - End, looking downstream, into dam
4 - End, looking upstream, from dam

d)  Dam
1 - looking down dam
2 - looking up dam

w)  Wheel & Lower goit  / Tail race
1 - looking down to wheel, or exit sluice (mainly east),
2 - looking up to wheel, or exit sluice (mainly west),

x)   Lower goit  / Tail race
1 - Lower race/goit,  looking downstream to river
2 - Lower race/goit,  looking upstream to exit goit

e)  Overflow channel
1 - looking downstream from dam
2 - looking upstream to dam
3 - looking downstream to river (mainly east)
4 - looking upstream to dam overflow (mainly west).

Please note - some sites are on private land, so access is not always available.
Where a photo is not possible, no view, etc, that area is greyed out,
Where a photo is very unlikely, due to access, etc, that area is pale greyed out,
(often with n/a  or n/t appended to the intended photo number).
If there are no or little remains, a light brown background indicates the photos show the current site.
If the name of a picture appears in a white rectangle - I haven't taken a photo yet!

The Links page is exactly that, links to other websites
with info &/or pictures associated with the Porter Brook, it's dams, wheels and water courses.
